Equinox: The Equal Accord of Light and Dark
Twice a year, in spring and in autumn, the sun rises and sets exactly along the east–west line. On these days, night and day come closest to each other and last almost the same length. The equinox: the equal accord of light and dark.
For centuries, many cultures watched the turning of the seasons and the cycles of the sky closely, and greeted these moments with festivals and rituals. Perhaps what they sensed was this: the harmony outside can be a mirror of the harmony within.
The Equinox Within Us
One of the greatest tirednesses of modern life comes from being conditioned to chase the light. Happiness, success, energy, productivity: all on the side of the light. Darkness, meanwhile, has been coded as the side to suppress, ignore or fix.
Yet the equinox whispers a different truth: darkness is not the absence of light, but its complement. Resting and withdrawing are part of life too. The deepest understandings are born in silence. The greatest intuitions come when we turn inward.
A Threshold of Balance Ritual
As the equinox approaches, ask yourself: which parts of my life get too much light, and which are left in the shade? This isn't only a metaphor. It is a practical balance check that asks what you say yes and no to, where your energy flows, and which relationships or projects you shine your light on.
Take a sheet of paper. On the left, write “What I overfeed”; on the right, “What I neglect”. Fill it in honestly. The list can help you see where you want to find your balance.
Nature's Invitation to Realign
In Boholia's philosophy, the equinox is a time to realign. Not quite a time to let go, nor a time to cling blindly. Rather: to see, to accept and to align. To honour both your light and your darkness.
This evening, watch the sunset. As the sun sinks into the flat line of the horizon, let your mind rest on that line for a moment. No insisting, no escaping; just balance. This short meditation is a reminder of your inner equinox.
